Market Trust: Guinea Launches Campaign for Fair Measurements

By Damilola Adeyera

Djoumè Sangaré, Director General of the Guinean Institute of Standardization and Metrology (IGNM), officially launched the national campaign on Thursday to evaluate product conformity to current standards and verify measuring instruments.

The initiative operates under the auspices of the Ministry of Industry and Trade. The campaign directly supports Pillars 1 (Agriculture, Food Industry, and Trade) and 5 (Health and Well-being) of Guinea’s Simandou 2040 Development Program, aiming to boost consumer protection, improve the accuracy of market transactions, and elevate the competitiveness of the local economy.

Enforcement teams have already deployed across Conakry, targeting high-volume commercial hubs including the Kakimbo slaughterhouse, the Kénien and Niger markets, and the SOBRAGUI brewery. Early operations combined equipment checks with merchant education. During the initial sweeps, inspectors seized eight non-compliant automatic scales and issued official certificates of conformity to those that met national standards.

Director General Sangaré emphasized that standardizing equipment and verifying product quality are critical steps toward building economic stability and market trust, in line with directives from Minister Aboubacar Kourouma.

The IGNM confirmed that the inspection drive will expand across the country in the coming weeks. Upcoming phases will target a broad spectrum of commercial sectors, including agri-food, construction materials, electrical equipment and cables, industrial chemicals, and general consumer goods.

Agency officials have urged business owners, manufacturers, and the public to cooperate fully with inspectors, framing measurement accuracy and standard compliance as a shared civic responsibility vital to national growth.
