WHAT IS MOTHERLAND BECKONS? INSIDE AFRICA’S FAST RISING CULTURAL MOVEMENT

BY ONYEKACHI VICTORIA PHILIP

A fast growing cultural and tourism movement known as Motherland Beckons is gradually gaining international attention as African leaders, creatives, tourism experts, and diaspora communities rally behind a renewed vision for Africa’s cultural identity and economic growth.

The initiative, which masterminds reconnecting Africans in the diaspora with their roots, promotes African heritage, tourism, entertainment, investment, and cultural exchange across the continent.

Led by tourism entrepreneur, Otunba Wanle Akinboboye and supported by several government and private sector partnerships, Motherland Beckons is positioning Africa as more than just a travel destination.

Organizers describe it as a movement designed to reconnect people of African descent with the continent through culture, history, business opportunities, festivals, and tourism experiences.

In recent months, the initiative has recorded major developments, especially in Nigeria where it has become increasingly linked to the country’s tourism and creative economy agenda.

Federal Government Endorses Motherland 2025 Festival:

Nigeria’s Federal Government recently threw its weight behind the “Motherland 2025 Festival,” with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu inviting Africans across the world to participate in the cultural and tourism initiative expected to hold in Lagos and Abuja.

The festival is projected to spotlight African music, food, fashion, art, film, and tourism while strengthening ties with the African diaspora.

Renewed Hope Creative City Goes Operational:

One of the biggest developments linked to the initiative is the launch of the Renewed Hope Creative City in Abuja.

The project is expected to serve as a major hub for:

Film production
Digital innovation
Fashion and arts
Entertainment business development.

Youth empowerment within the creative sector:

Officials say the project aligns with efforts to grow Nigeria’s creative economy and attract international partnerships.

Massive Tourism Expansion in Taraba:
Motherland Beckons also expanded into large scale tourism development through a partnership with the Taraba State Government.

Reports indicate that new tourism sites and hospitality projects are being developed with expectations of attracting millions of tourists over the next few years.

The development includes eco tourism concepts, resorts, and heritage attractions intended to position Taraba as a major tourism destination in Africa.

Expansion Beyond Nigeria:
The initiative is no longer limited to Nigeria alone. Organizers have reportedly begun expanding partnerships into other African countries including:
Ghana
Benin Republic
Côte d’Ivoire
Tanzania.

The expansion is aimed at building a stronger pan-African tourism and cultural network across the continent.

The movement has attracted attention from Africans in the diaspora, tourism stakeholders, creatives, and investors who believe Africa’s cultural identity can become one of the continent’s biggest economic strengths.

However, some critics argue that issues such as insecurity, infrastructure challenges, and economic instability must also be addressed for the vision to fully succeed.

Despite this, Motherland Beckons continues to gain visibility as one of the continent’s boldest tourism and cultural reconnection movements in recent years.
