BEHIND THE TALKING DRUM, WHO IS ARA THUNDER?

By Onyekachi Victoria Philip

The first-ever female talking drummer from the East, Janet Ofurum Chinedu, popularly known as Ara Thunder, has opened up on an unknown side of her life, offering a glimpse beyond the stage, the spotlight, and the sound of her drums.

Widely recognized as an iconic brand ambassador under the guidance of Otunba Wanle Akinboboye, Ara Thunder has built a reputation for her exciting performances and cultural expression.

Her talent has drawn admiration from high-profile figures, including Emmanuel Macron, further sealing her place as a global cultural star.

Yet, behind the fame and powerful stage presence lies a deeply grounded personality shaped by family, discipline, and strong personal values.

In a recent in-depth interview, Ara Thunder spoke about her background, revealing that she hails from Imo State and comes from a close-knit family of six, four girls and two boys.

As the last daughter, she described growing up under the protective care of her parents, who played a crucial role in nurturing her creative gifts from an early age.

“My family has always been supportive of my music,” she shared, speaking on her childhood experiences in dance groups, competitions, and musical activities as early as age six.

She credits much of her artistic influence to her mother, who was a dancer in her youth and often participated in village competitions.

“I think I got that talent from her,” she added.

Beyond talent, Ara Thunder spoke emotionally on the values instilled in her by her parents, principles that continue to guide her personal and professional life.

“They taught me to be myself, not to copy others, to be content, and to stand by what I believe in,” she said.

Although originally from the East, she grew up in Aguda, Surulere in Lagos, where her parents maintained a structured and protective environment.

This upbringing, she added, helped shape her focus and discipline, laying a strong foundation for her future career.

Balancing family life with a demanding career remains a priority for the superstar.

According to her, maintaining peace at home is essential to her success.

“There’s no way I can function well outside if my home is not in order. When everyone is happy, it gives me the drive to give my best,” she explained.

Her passion for the arts was evident even during her school years, where she actively participated in performances, often taking on leadership roles as a dance instructor.

This was further confirmed after she shared a heartfelt message from a former classmate who remembered her as both a talented dancer and an inspiring teacher, long before her rise to fame.

Reflecting on her journey, Ara Thunder revealed that her breakthrough came shortly after completing secondary school, particularly during her early years with ATunda Entertainment.

Her family’s reaction to her sudden rise was one of surprise and pride, as they watched her transition into the spotlight.

While music remains her primary path, the heroine revealed that she would have explored a career in fashion if she had chosen a different direction, another indication of her deep-rooted creativity.

Describing her family in three words, supportive, considerate, and loving, Ara Thunder’s story is one of talent nurtured by strong values, discipline, and unwavering support.
