Students of Chris land College stepped beyond the traditional classroom setting to participate in the Kamp Afrika experience at La Campagne Tropicana Forest, River and Beach Resort, where they combined adventure, cultural immersion, environmental learning, and leadership development.

The educational excursion formed part of the students’ participation in the prestigious The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award programme, designed to challenge young people through activities that build confidence, resilience, and leadership skills.
Speaking during the programme, Operational Head of Opra Initiatives for National Development, Omolanrewaju Arowola, explained that the participants were undertaking the Bronze International Award level for young people in Nigeria.
According to him, the programme engages students in exploration, expedition activities, endurance trekking, and other outdoor experiences aimed at testing their adventurous spirit and rewarding them with an internationally recognised award.

“The programme is meant to take them away from their comfort zones and expose them to different environments that help develop leadership qualities, discover talents, and teach them how to survive and work together without constant adult supervision,” Arowola said.
A major highlight of the experience was an endurance trek through the neighbouring Lepia community, after which the students journeyed through the resort’s scenic pathways to the Atlantic Ocean beachfront.
Upon arrival at the central activity area, they were treated to a colourful African cultural reception featuring traditional songs, drumming, dance performances, and local delicacies.
The Kamp Afrika experience also provided valuable environmental education.
Guided by local experts, the students explored mangrove ecosystems, learned about tidal movements, and gained practical insights into the relationship between local fishing communities and their environment.

Beyond the educational lessons, the outdoor activities created opportunities for personal growth and teamwork.
Teachers observed students who rarely interacted within the classroom taking on leadership roles, encouraging peers, and demonstrating strategic thinking during various group challenges and games.
Throughout the programme, La Campagne Tropicana provided a secure and comfortable environment, ensuring that participants enjoyed authentic African hospitality through carefully organised meals, accommodation, and guided activities.
At the end of the excursion, the students returned home with more than photographs and memories.

The Kamp Afrika experience was not merely a school trip but a transformative journey that combined learning, adventure, culture, and self-discovery in a way that will remain memorable for years to come.
