A thriving dimension of the fishing industry in Ikegun Community, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State, has been brought to light by successful entrepreneur Raphael Omobuwajo, a prominent figure in the local fishing business.

Raphael, who proudly describes himself as a product and mentee of La Campagne Tropicana River Forest and Beach Resort Founder and CEO, Otunba Wanle Akinboboye, shared insights into his journey from humble beginnings to becoming a well-established entrepreneur in the fishing industry.

According to him, his inspiration was ignited during his early years while working under Otunba Akinboboye.

The mentorship, exposure, and entrepreneurial values he gained during that period, he said, laid the foundation for his success in business.

Raphael challenged the long-held perception that fishing is merely a subsistence occupation with limited financial rewards.

He maintained that the industry’s revenue potential is far greater than many people imagine, describing commercial fishing as a highly profitable venture when properly managed.

He revealed that his professional fishing journey took a significant turn when he travelled to Ghana to deepen his knowledge of commercial fishing.

According to him, Ghana’s fishing sector exposed him to innovative techniques, experienced fishermen, and best practices that strengthened his vision and expanded his understanding of the business.

Speaking on fish species and ocean conditions, Raphael explained that certain species, such as Kote, cannot survive in the strong currents of the Atlantic Ocean around the Ikegun coastline.

He added that such species thrive better in countries like Senegal, Ghana, and Côte d’Ivoire. However, species such as Shawa, crayfish, and tilapia are better suited to the Atlantic waters within the community.

According to him, experienced fishermen carefully study tides, currents, and weather patterns, as failure to do so can result in damaged fishing nets, hooks, and other expensive equipment.

Speaking on the financial realities of the business, Raphael disclosed the enormous investment required to operate a successful fishing enterprise.

He revealed that a single rope costs approximately ₦280,000, while a bundle costs about ₦389,000. He added that quality fishing nets also require substantial capital, noting that the larger the net, the higher the cost, but the greater the volume of fish that can be harvested.

Beyond the cost of equipment, Raphael explained that he also bears the responsibility of supporting the fishermen who help haul in the catch, ensuring they are catered for even before the proceeds from fish sales are realized.

Despite his success, Raphael said he has maintained a close relationship with Otunba Akinboboye, acknowledging the continued encouragement and support he receives from his longtime mentor.

According to him, financial prudence, perseverance, and faith are essential ingredients for building and sustaining a successful fishing enterprise.
